Efforts to reduce CO₂ emissions
As Japan's promise to reduce greenhouse gases after 2020, the Ministry of the Environment has set a target of a 26.0% reduction (approximately 1,042 million tons-CO₂ emission) by 2030 compared to Y2013. This figure is a very high goal compared to other countries. In order to pass on the beautiful earth to the next generation, Gunze remains committed to solving the problems that require technology and cost reductions.
1. Conversion to low CO₂ emission energy
Target figures: 26% reduction in 2030 Gunze is shifting from heavy fuel oil A which emits a large amount of CO₂ to fuel oil such as city gas, LPG, and LNG which emits less CO₂. Since electricity generated by thermal power emits a large amount of CO₂, Gunze is now using electricity generated by nuclear power, hydraulic power, solar power and wind power as an energy with low CO₂ emissions. Gunze is also reviewing power supply companies that are working to reduce CO₂ emissions.
2. Switch to LED lighting
Gunze is switching to LED lighting in all facilities. This is an initiative to reduce CO₂ emissions by using equipment that consumes less power. Since the production volume is increasing year by year, the amount of electricity used is increasing, but the amount of CO₂ emissions is suppressed. The actual amount of electricity in 2019 was reduced by 22.5% compared to Y2013 and Gunze remains committed to reducing the amount of electricity by 1% every year toward Y2030.
3. Efforts to save energy by updating equipment
Gunze is working to save energy by updating to high-efficiency equipment. Initial investment will be required, but it will lead to energy saving by changing to efficient equipment.
4. Introducing a monitoring system using AI technology in collaboration with other companies
Gunze is preparing an AI technology system which can assist in saving energy. After introducing the system, their factories can prepare enough energy for weekdays and save energy on weekends.
