Ayabe City Zero Carbon Award Ceremony

What is Ayabe Zero Carbon Award?

Japan declared that it would aim to "realize a carbon neutral, decarbonized society by 2050" by reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050 in October 2020. And then the National and Local Decarbonization Realization Council, which was established in response to this "2050 Carbon Neutral Declaration," compiled the "Regional Decarbonization Roadmap” in June 2021. This roadmap outlines actions and concrete measures to achieve a decarbonized society from a consumer perspective, focusing on the "livelihood" and "society" sectors in the region. This regional decarbonization roadmap is organized into "Zero Carbon Action 30" actions that lead to decarbonization in daily life, including food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and shopping.
Ayabe City endorsed this roadmap and declared its commitment to take on the challenge of becoming a "Zero Carbon City" with virtually zero carbon emissions by 2050 on September 6, 2021. As one of its initiatives, the city has established the "Ayabe Zero Carbon Award".

About Gunze

Gunze was founded in 1896 by Tsurukichi Hatano in Ikaruga Ward (now Ayabe City) to promote the local silkworm industry. The founder had an enthusiastic determination to contribute to the development of his hometown community by promoting the local silk industry. He believed that this should serve as Ikaruga's policy, so he named his company Gunze Silk Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (later renamed Gunze Limited), with "Gunze" meaning "district policy" in Japanese. Today, Gunze is a leading designer and manufacturer of plastic films, engineering plastics, medical devices, electronic components, apparel and other products. Gunze employs more than 5,600 people in 10 countries around the world.
